Upcoming Plans

This is a long explanation of what has been happening the past few years with regards to the Dufferin Forests. Grab a beverage and enjoy the read! Thanks for your time.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

So for the past several years there has been planning in place to form a Recreation Plan for the Dufferin County Forests.  It began with a committee that had done a great deal of great work to be eventually be put on hold mid-late 2014.

A second committee was formed and has been working on the Recreation Plan for the last year and a half. A Draft Recreation Plan has now been approved by that committee and by Dufferin County Council to be put out for public comment.  The feedback from the public consultation will then be considered by the Committee and then after any adjustments to the Draft Plan,  it will be sent back to Council for final approval.

I’m encouraging everyone to please review the Draft Plan and send in your feedback. The more positive feedback the Committee receives for the Draft Plan, the more likely it will remain unchanged.  If there are specific items that you would like to see approved (for example, separate trail networks), please feel free to be specific in your comments as well.

Please keep in mind that anyone not agreeing with items in the Draft Plan will very likely be sending in their comments and attending the Open Houses to express their opinions.  The issue that may arise is that it is not as common to provide feedback if one agrees with an issue. It is therefore equally important for the supporters to also demonstrate their positive support though e-mails and Open House participation as this feedback will be guiding the next steps. Attending one (or both) of the Open Houses would be a very positive action.

The dates and locations for the Open House meetings are:

Weds Feb 8th, 55 Zina Street, The Sutton Room, Orangeville from 3pm-8pm.

Sat. Feb 11th Dufferin Museum, 936029 Airport Rd, Mulmur (Hwy 89 & Airport Rd.) from 10am-4pm.

To provide feedback by e-mail as well, go to:

http://www.dufferincounty.ca/government/contact-us#DEPARTMENTAL CONTACTS

and click on the blue FEEDBACK tab at the left side of the screen.

You can also e-mail as well (why not do both?) the Forest Manager at

forestmanager@dufferinmuseum.com  (just cut and paste e-mail address)

The closing date for comments is March 31st.

This Recreation Plan is intended to be in place for a twenty year period from its date of implimation. The importance of public input cannot be understated.  Please send this information to anyone or any groups you may know that would have an interest in or who rides, or would like to ride Dufferin Forest now or in the next 20 years. Any questions, please contact me through the “CONTACT” tab. Thank you for your time and in advance for your input and support for the trails.

This years Sausage Suit Individual Time Trial just like last year includes the option to stay around after the race, bring your BBQ, pitch your tent (or trailer, or Van!) , have dinner then enjoy the evening around a campfire.  Sing some songs, enjoy trail stories and meet some new people!  If you have bike lights, why not bring those as well, you never know, maybe a night ride may happen!

We have use of a large grassy area with plenty of room to camp for the evening after the race. And it’s free with your entry fee!

Registration will open soon: http://eco-race.com/eco-race/Sausage_Suit_ITT.html

SausageRider

The premise of the SSITT is an individual start with 30 seconds between each rider….no mass start, no crowds!  This also means lots ‘o single track, not so much double track. Options for the Bike are 15km or 30km (approx.).

Don’t feel like riding that weekend, training for a running event?  Dan  (substance projects) has got you covered….also available is a 15km (approx.) trail run.  Same fun single track course, just on foot!  That should give everyone something to do.

The course will be a single lap (15km) or two laps (30km) of the single track exclusively in Dufferin Forest.

For more info and updates as they happen go to  www.eco-race.com/eco-race/Sausage_Suit_ITT.html

Dufferin Forest Management Plan – Public Meeting

You are invited to attend a public meeting on the development of a new twenty-year management plan for the 2,600 acre Dufferin County Forest:
Tuesday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m.
Mel Lloyd Centre – Auditorium
167 Centre Street (Entrance D)
Shelburne, Ontario
The County Forest is made up of thirteen tracts located throughout Dufferin County. The plan will guide the use and management of the Dufferin County Forest over the next twenty years (2015-2035) to ensure the health and viability of this community resource.
The Forest Plan Advisory Team, which has been advising the County throughout the development of the draft plan, is holding this open public meeting to hear input regarding the draft forest management plan, draft recreation policy, and the OFTR proposal for access to the Forest by off-road motorcycles. This is an additional opportunity for any members of the public to have input on the recreational and other uses of the forest.
Documents relating to the Dufferin County Forest Management Plan are found here.
Written input regarding any of the items mentioned above can be provided to the County Forest Manager at any time between now and July 31, 2014:
By email: forestmanager@dufferinmuseum.com
By mail: Dufferin County Forest (c/o DCMA)
936029 Airport Road, Mulmur, Ontario L9V 0L3
By fax: 705-435-9876

A good show from the MTB community at all the upcoming meetings would be beneficial.

Thanks and see you there,

Johnny
